Brooklyn Nets, New York Islanders, and New York Mets lead us into the holiday

It is Wednesday so that means our EWB Power Rankings are in with the Brooklyn Nets, New York Mets, and New York Islanders leading the way. Find out where your team stands as we head into the holiday!

The Brooklyn Nets and New York Islanders are rolling in the heart of their seasons while the New York Mets continue to ball on their offseason.

However, this has actually been a great week overall for the New York market.

We all know Christmas time in New York City is tough to beat, but it is that much sweeter when the sports team are rolling.

With it being the last Wednesday before the holiday, let’s rank the 12 teams we cover based how their last week has gone.

1

Nets

Last rank: 2

The Brooklyn Nets enter December 19 action on a six game winning streak. It was not to long ago they were in the middle of an eight game losing steak. Now, they are rolling and everyone is helping. They just beat the Lakers at home and LeBron James. tried his hardest to comeback to no avail. It ended up being a D’Angelo Russell dagger that iced his former team in the winding minutes. The Nets might not be a playoff team when it is all said and done. But in the last week, they have been playing better than any team in the NBA. More like the Brookwin Nets, am I right?

2

Isles

Last week: 5

The Islanders end the week on a three game winning steak. Two of those wins came on the road during a back to back swing that saw two wins in two nights in two cities. Josh Ho-Sang is officially on the Isles score sheet this year with his goal in Arizona and the Isles are finally proving why they currently sit in a playoff spot as we near Christmas. That is the best present they could have given me.

3

Metropolitans

Last week: 3

The New York Mets have given their fans some early Christmas gifts. The big gift came in the form of a closer via Seattle and this week they stuffed our stockings by sneaking in and signing Wilson Ramos for two years with options. Winning the offseason is not an official stat and the Mets might ultimately fail to land the biggest names this offseason but they might have improved their roster the most over any team in baseball so far this offseason. The Mets were getting ranked high for not messing up. Now, they are getting ranked high for making correct move after correct move. What a time to be baseball fan in the winter.

4

The Sam Darnold’s

Last rank: 6

The New York Jets. Wow. They crank the top five even though they lost. For one, I think Sam Darnold had his best game as a pro vs the Texans. When taking opponent, weather, injured teammates, weird time, and a lot of tension between fans and front office, into consideration, Sam lit it up. The Jets came up short but played a heck of a game. The Jets, and this cannot go wihtout mentioning, also moved up in the draft order due to some league wide wins that helped them out. Sam Darnold looking like a stud  in spite of all the dysfunction AND in line for a high draft pick? Sign me up yesterday.

5

Buffalo Bills

Last rank: 11

I know I don’t like to get into the Bills that much in these rankings, but they deserve the top five this week. They are the only football team we cover that won this week and it was not easy. Without LeSean McCoy, Chris Ivory, and eventually their third string running back, all battling injures, Josh Allen and the Bills still took care of business on Sunday. Allen got it done on his feet per usual but also threw a dime to and un-drafted WR Robert Foster for a TD. The Bills battled basically everyone and their backups injured into a gutsy December home win. Josh Allen is the franchise QB. They won, but even when they lose he can’t control it. That makes life much easier as a Bills fan. Patriots coming off two losses is next so the Bills better enjoy this ranking while they have it.

6

Rangers

Last rank: 8

A come from behind win during Tuesday’s game against the Ducks at home saved them from a free fall down the standings. The Rangers spent most of the week taking OT losses like a kid takes candy on Halloween. Their Tuesday win vs the Ducks saved that. The Rangers are still out of the playoff picture but have incredible fight. Fight alone does not usually beat out better talent but it calls for exciting hockey. The Rangers also have 11 home wins. So, going to The Garden to watch them is still fun, even with this roster.

7

Red Bulls

Last rank: 4

More or less ranked here because there is no where else to squeeze them into. I can’t punish them either because they did nothing wrong. However, I’m starting to appreciate the Shield win more and more now that the MLS Cup Final has come and gone. Also, this week the MLS announced a new Playoff format that is single elimination and gives home field to the best team left. So, the MLS has another playoff format that I am naive to think the Red Bulls actually have a chance of winning this time. Let’s just move on.

8

G-Men

Last rank: 1

They scored zero points in an NFL game, of course they are going to be ranked poorly. I could have gathered myself and 10 of my friends and we would have scored zero points against the Titans as well. I understand football is hard, and I shouldn’t talk,  but I have such little tolerance for watching a team I cover get shutout. It happens, but it’s just as aggravating every time. But, hey, Saquon Barkley is a Giants running back who just got named to the Pro Bowl and that is worth talking about. The Eli Manning saga remains polarizing, and the Giants will likely not have a great draft pick. So, pick your poison here. Either way, Met Life is gloomy when the Giants are playing.

9

Yanks

Last rank: 7

I said it last week and I will say it again now, the New York Yankees will skyrocket the standings when/if they get Manny Machado and become the best lineup in baseball. By the time this post goes live, he might already be a Yankee. But for now, if just adding James Paxton and re-signing J.A. Happ is basically all they have done, they still are not beating the Red Sox. Sorry. Top 10 and in the offseason is not too shabby though

10

New York City Football Club

Last rank: 9

It has been a quiet offseason for NYCFC since David Villa left, but like the Red Bulls, a new playoff format could help them. The awkward soccer confines of Yankee Stadium favors no one a lot, but the boys in blue the most. If they pick up where they left off last summer, they can ride into the 2019 MLS Cup Final with all winnable games. But, that is 11 months away and again, just an “if.” For now, they stay towards the bottom of the ranking, but that could change because things in the beautiful game always do.

11

Devs

Last rank: 10

The New Jersey Devils. What a mess. They are historically great so this is tough to swallow. But, my goodness, they are terrible this year. Both Cory Schneider and Keith Kinkaid have had massive fall offs and the defense has given up. They continue to plummet down the East and only a fluke win vs the Knights highlighted the week. They just gave up a TD to the Maple Leafs. But, do the Devils still have hope? Yeah, if Mackenzie Blackwood is the next Martin Brodeur, then sure, they have hope. When is the NHL draft again?

12

Zion’s Future Team?

Last rank: 12

The Knicks lost to the Suns at home this past week. That is really all I need to say. I wanted to type “hahahaahaha” for a few lines, but obviously cannot do that. The Knicks are very bad. That is really it. They have a bunch of guys, but not the guy. First it was Tim Hardaway Jr carrying the load. Then lately, it has been Emmanuel Mudiay. This is all fine. The top 5 draft picks are deep this year and Zion Williamson is the most intriguing prospect to me since LeBron. Yes, I am likely over-correcting. But, with Mitchell Robinson spending a lot of time injured, Frank Ntilikina already leaning towards bust, and Kevin Knox developing slowly, there is not much there. I want the Knicks to lose, not tank. There is a difference and I am not sure which one the Knicks are doing right now. But, either way, the fact that I want to skip from now right into the 2019 Draft is depressing. This Knicks season is way too long.

Well, there you have it. My brutal honest take on each team in New York right now.

Most rankings will likely change by the time our next Power Rankings roll around because New York sports teams never sleep.

Next: Why should you be team Brodie Van Wagenen?

Happy Holidays!
