James Robert Gladden attended Meharry Professional medical School, where by he gained his M.D. diploma and gained the Andrew Nelson Award for the optimum four-12 months GPA. In 1943, Freedmen’s Hospital, affiliated with Howard College, grew to become the only establishment in the state where by African Individuals could routinely get hold of approved teaching. He then grew to become the first complete time orthopaedic resident at the College. He continued to pioneer in the specialty and in 1949 grew to become the first African American accredited by the American Board of Orthopaedic Medical procedures and the first to be elected to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He also grew to become the first non-white physician to carry out a big operation at King George’s Hospital in Hamilton, Bermuda.
