It looks like 10-time All-Star Carmelo Anthony will need to find another new home in the NBA after surprising news that the Rockets are looking to waive him some time soon, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Anthony isn’t expected to be with Houston for the third straight game on Tuesday, with the Rockets saying he is out due to an illness. But it looks like the Rockets are done with Anthony after just 10 games this season.
So, if the 34-year-old hits the market, where could he land? Vegas has the Sixers as the favorite to land Anthony at +125, and the Lakers came in second at +350. But a return to New York was also among the highest possible teams — and it wasn’t the Knicks.
The Nets were at +400 odds, according to BetDSI, and the move could make sense. Brooklyn’s small forward position has DeMarre Carroll and Joe Harris currently on the depth chart, but these two players don’t have the same level of experience as Melo. Harris is primarily a three-ball shooter, while Carroll is currently easing himself back into the rotation having missed time due to an ankle injury.
And after Caris LeVert’s injury on Monday night, an experienced scorer to take over his role could go a long way.
But Anthony doesn’t need to be an immediate starter with the Nets if he’s brought on. He was coming off the bench with the Rockets, where he was averaging 13.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 40.5 percent from the field.
We’ll see if the Nets are interested in Melo if he hits the free-agent market soon.
