Long Island Nets bring 17 players to training camp

The Long Island Nets opened training camp Monday in North Hempstead with a roster of 17 hopefuls, including six players who were in Nets camp: two two-way contracts and four “affiliate” players.

The two ways are Alan Williams, a 6’9” power forward who has been hurt and rookie Theo Pinson, a 6’7” swingman. The camp invites include Mitch Creek, the 6’5” Australian forward; Jordan McLaughlin, a 6’1” point guard; Nuni Omot, a 6’9” stretch 4 and Drew Gordon, a 6’9” power forward. All but Gordon, Aaron’s 29-year-old brother, are rookies.

The roster includes five returning players, three NBA G League Draft selections and three local tryout players. Not on the roster were two players who the Nets acquired in trades last week: Marshall Plumlee, the former Knick center, and Nick Zeisloft, who played for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants last year and is currently toiling in Italy. No word on whether either will ultimately join the team.

The roster also contains two Brooklyn natives, returning player Kamari Murphy, a 6’10” power forward and draft pick Jahvari Josiah, a 6’4” guard. A third invite, Durand Scott, is from the Bronx.

Two local college players, Ish Sanogo, a 6’8” defensive minded forward from Seton Hall, and Nate Hickman, a 6’4” shooting guard from Columbia, are also on the roster.

G League clubs can carry a minimum of 10 players, with two additional spots available for players placed on the inactive/injury list. A team’s active roster may expand to up to 13 players if its parent club assigns players from its NBA roster.

Training camp began Monday with practices at the North Hempstead “Yes We Can” Community Center in Westbury, and Media Day will be held on Friday, Octobert 26, at 2 p.m. at NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The Long Island Nets will officially tip off the 2018-19 season on November 3, against the Westchester Knicks at NYCB LIVE. All games are carried on the G League YouTube channel and six games will be televised on the YES Network. The first YES game is Thursday, November 8 at 7 p.m. ET vs. the Capital City Go-Go, the Wizards affiliate.
