That is what Fox Sports pundit Skip Bayless believes.
The Lakers return home on Friday night after a stretch of games on the road.
They face trade target Anthony Davis and the New Orleans Pelicans at the Staples Center.
Returning for the Lakers on Friday night could be Rondo, the injured point guard.
He has been out of action for the last 17 games, which has in turn led to young star Lonzo Ball getting increased game time.
And he has shone in his time on court, epitomised by his 23-point, six-rebound game against the Brooklyn Nets.
In the last three games, he has scored double figures in points every time.
But Bayless explained that with Rondo coming back into the team, it will seriously damage the progression of the 21-year-old.
“This hurts me to watch this unfold,” he admitted.
“I have no idea why Rajon Rondo is still on the roster, it is so bad for Lonzo Ball.
“And it’s going to hurt to watch even more if they have to split the minutes when Rondo comes back, because that was Lonzo’s most confident attack-mode game he’s had.
“He was taking and making big shots, there was one point where he missed a three, the rebound came back to him deep, and he just took a step back and went right into another three and made it.”
Bayless added that Ball’s improvement has been partly down to playing alongside LeBron James.
“That’s not the guy we saw last year, he would have passed that off to someone else,” he said.
“I think LeBron really enjoys playing with him [Ball].
“I think it’s going to become a weakness to have him on the bench, because look how quickly Lonzo’s minutes drop, and then watch how quickly his confidence drops.
“This is a sorry situation.”
